Apr 10, Narelle D'amico rated it really liked it.

Loved this book, I really didnt know a lot about the characters before I started reading Blood Queen but I think thats what made me like it more.

Such strong women with such fight in them. Love Joannas books. On to Fire Queen.

Assolutamente consigliato!

Cora MacDuff will be wedding her beloved Macbeth but on the evening before her nuptials traitors in their midst slaughter many and drive out Macbeth and his men.

Sibyll is a Dane living in York who is asked to become the wife of the heir to Scotland's throne. Both women see tragedy and joy as they strive to crown their menfolk.

This is a historical novel based on the life of the real Lady Macbeth. Once again, Courtney brings ancient history to life with her excellent writing.

Sei la regina regnate, [ I spent many months studying Macbeth in secondary school, and Lady Macbeth is portrayed by Shakespeare as being an ambitious schemer.

Those of this who are interested in Scottish history however, know that Macbeth was a strong king, whose reign was peaceful and prosperous, so I was intrigued as to what his wife Lady Macbeth was like.

Unfortunately, this novel is not the one to tell Blood Queen I enjoy historical drama, and when I saw this the real story of Lady Macbeth I had to request this book.

Unfortunately, this novel is not the one to tell me very much about her. For a start her name is Cora. It does explain in the notes at the end that the author considered her real name to be to much of a mouthful.

But Cora? In 11th century Scotland? There are horrific scenes early in the book of rape, violence, and anima cruelty. Cora is horrifically raped and scarred.

I really began to feel that I was reading a different version of Outlander. This book almost languished on my Did Not Finish shelf, but I did manage to get to the end.

The research into the back story of Alba as Scotland was known in the 11th Century is interesting.

The dual story line of Cora and Sybil is also interesting but as a novel it was not what I hoped. Thank to you the publishers and Netgalley for an advance ARC in return for an honest review.

This seemed like an interesting read but I didn't realise for a while that it was based on real history as opposed to Shakespeare's play.

Macbeth is rumoured to be from my hometown but the real history is not something I was particularly aware of so I was looking forward to finding out more.

The chapters alternate between their two viewpoints. I preferred Sybil's character and story overall, I couldn't really buy into Cora's motivations and didn't feel like I got a meaningful insight into her character.

The author clearly did her research but the voice of the book just felt too modern. Would an 11th century queen really refer to her son as 'Lachy'?

It didn't help that names were changed to make them more accessible to the modern reader which I felt was unnecessary. The plot also just felt a bit dull.

It's almost impossible not to compare it to the Shakespeare tale and, in my opinion, it's just not a particularly interesting period of Scottish history.

Little things niggled me about the setting too like referring to Rosemarkie as 'Moray'. It may be on the Moray Firth but is most certainly not Moray.

Overall, it was solidly ok but I wouldn't be in a rush to recommend it to anyone. May 03, Liberty Jackson rated it it was amazing.

I absolutely adored this book. I love historical novels that are well researched enough that you learn plenty about the history without it feeling like you are being weighed down with unnecessary facts.

This book taught me loads about tenth century Scotland, how spread out it was, the practice of alternate succession, the danger and the religion.

I am personally very interested in Celtic Christianity, and how it developed separately from the Catholic Church, and there were just enough hints of I absolutely adored this book.

I am personally very interested in Celtic Christianity, and how it developed separately from the Catholic Church, and there were just enough hints of it here to draw me in.

There are two engaging female characters who are interesting and write their own stories, despite holding their power at least partly by their relation to men.

It is rare to read a book which deals so thoroughly with a conflict spread over decades, where it is so hard to take sides. I found myself routing for both sides to survive which is a world with the brutality of this one, was a recipe for heartache.

As it was set around little known historical events rather than following a standard three act structure, every twist and turn took me by surprise.

Blood Queen was not even slightly what I expected. But when the only criticism I really have is that it was a different book to the one I was expecting, I can one disappointed.

I was reading the story and the historical notes at the same times, got to page 33 and had to stop. I was already annoyed because the map is incorrect.

The story mostly surrounds around a gypsy brother and sister whom come under Countess Bathorys control. The siblings start to see what kind of "lady" Bathorys is.

Cruel, had an obsession with staying young and beautiful and assumed had a blood lust. The siblings carry this movie.

I thought the actors did a very good job and everything seemed to be of that period. Now, some facts.

During this time it wasn't uncommon for royalty to treat their workers peasants with cruelty. In fact, there is little to no evidence that Lady Bathory committed such crimes as described throughout history.

Evidence of any kind was burned. In fact some were paid to testify against Bathory. She was also a Protestant, which would also have "cause" to have suspicious about her.

In today's courts she would never be convicted. Now when you think about Lady Bathory, take it with a grain of salt. Do some research.

Is she the blood countess that history tells? Or was she a typical Royal at the time made an example of by the King? Look at the facts not story's that have been passed down to keep people in fear of possible fictional.

I used the word fact in quotes because of possible misinterpretation of Countess Bathorys take. People love monsters. Don't they?

This was a more minimalist approach to the story of one of history's most mythical human monsters. I have heard some say that she was no more evil than other nobles of her time, and was singled out for being Protestant.

There have been more opulent productions Erzsebet Bathory, such as Julie Delpy's and Juraj Jakubisko's about 10 years ago. I thought it was pretty good, especially since it tried to personalize the children's relationship with the Countess, showing more dimensions to her than one sees in the more exploitive movies.

For a more expansive view, I recommend Delpy's and Jakubisko's films. For a human interest approach, this one worked well.

This movie was just terrible. The movie was a heap of garbage from beginning to end. We waited and waited for something interesting to happen.

I'm not much on turning historical tales and "thrillers" into cute kids in jeopardy, as I almost invariably find such stories stupidly written and the acting of the cute kids not very good.

Most of the witnesses testified that they had heard the accusations from others, but didn't see it themselves. The servants confessed under torture, which is not credible in contemporary proceedings.

They were the king's witnesses, but they were executed quickly. The accusations of murder were based on rumors.

There is no document to prove that anyone in the area complained about the Countess. In this time period, if someone was harmed, or someone even stole a chicken, a letter of complaint was written.

The palatine also coordinated the steps of the investigation with the political struggle with the Prince of Transylvania. The widow was detained in the castle of Csejte for the rest of her life, where she died at the age of She wrote a will in September , in which she left all current and future inheritance possession to her children.

Just go lie down. The Csejte church or the castle of Csejte do not bear any markings of her possible grave. The theory is consistent with Hungarian history at that time, which included religious and political conflicts, especially relating to the wars with the Ottoman Empire, the spread of Protestantism and the extension of Habsburg power over Hungary.

There are counter-arguments made against this theory. The most common motif of these works was that of the countess bathing in her victims' blood to retain beauty or youth.

They included no references to blood baths. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Hungarian countess. This article uses Western name order when mentioning individuals.
